'Surtr n ogygia' alludes to the dual mythological connection with the artists' country of provenance, Iceland and Malta. Surtsey and Gozo being the object of study.
Bjornsdottir's work draws form the volcanic island of Surtsey with the aim of communicating
the natural world by filtering out a visual language that will portray nature as a process
while intrigued by the knowledge to be found there on origin, essence, basic structure,
continuity, interrelations and transformations.
Calleja departs from his familiar surroundings, by looking at Gozitan sedimentary rock. While aiming to achieve structures and visuals that witness the intricate variety of form enbedded in such confined places, he is more interested in how the pieces lend themselves to be discovered.
For Calleja, this work sees a shift in interest from visual 2D mark making into exploring the curvature in subsequent work.
